When you think of luxury living, a dorm room isn't the first thing that comes to mind. And it shouldn't, since dorm room furniture and decor is temporary and tends to get wrecked easily. Besides, the average college student doesn't have the budget for an interior decorator. However, a dorm room is a student's home, so a few luxury items can make a room feel a whole lot more cozy. If you're shopping for your dorm room--or shopping for a graduation gift or a special treat for your favorite college student--here are a few luxurious suggestions.
As a college student, sleep is a valuable thing! After a miserable late-night study session and a brutal early morning exam, there's nothing like curling up in cozy sheets and blankets for a long nap. High thread count sheets for a dorm room bed are a great splurge or gift-- and they may not be as expensive as you think, as you only need to purchase them for a twin bed. (Just make sure they fit, as some dorm beds are longer than the standard twin.) Comforters are, well, comforting, and if the dorm room is cold, a heavy down blanket or other warm blanket will be appreciated. And don't forget about pillows. Spend a little extra on a nice down pillow (or an artificial down one if the student is allergic).
One thing that's a bummer about college dorm life is the shared bathroom situation. A few luxurious bath items can make this experience more pleasant. Since most college students just swipe a few towels from their parents' closet, students will appreciate a luxurious set of plush towels that match, including an extra-long bath sheet. An excellent bathrobe is also a great idea, especially since students spend lots of time walking from their rooms to the bathroom. Of course, there are always scented bath products, which can be awfully nice after a long day.
When buying a nice item of clothing for a college student, think practical. Students need durable, seasonal clothing they can throw on ten minutes before class begins. Look for upscale items that fill the everyday needs of students. A luxurious and warm sweater will feel great during a blustery walk through campus (but make sure it's easy to clean). Shoes or boots that are great for walking but still stylish are a good idea too-- and spending extra on these can be practical, as students need to walk quite a bit. If a student attends school in a cold climate, nice outerwear will be appreciated, like cashmere gloves and scarves, or even a pashmina. And don't forget about makeup. Throwing on a quick coat of department store lipstick before that 8 a.m. final will make a sleepy but stylish sophomore feel refreshed.
You don't want to overdo the expense spent on dorm room decorations. However, a few nice items on the wall or elsewhere in the room can make the space much less bland. To spice up a wall full of unframed posters, consider purchasing one nice piece of framed art-- not too nice, and not too big, but special enough to stand out. You might consider framing a picture of family or friends in an especially nice desk or wall frame.
Dorm room life isn't supposed to be high end, so don't go crazy with expensive luxury items! However, a few splurges will help a student feel special and make a dorm room seem a little more like a home.
