Students moving into dorms for the first time must face the challenge of making new friends. The following tips offer ways students can meet people in student housing.
Most college students moving into dorms undertake the task of making new friends with the students on their dorm floors. The task of making new friends might even create stress for some students. However, there are several ways freshmen students can make new friends, such as by hosting game nights in their dorm rooms and by attending dorm events. These tips and others for making new friends are described below. Host a Game Night and Invite Students From the DormA great way to meet people and make friends is to host a game night. Students can invite people from their dorm floor to get together and play a game. A dorm-room game night could include card games, board games, or trivia games. The idea is that students from the same dorm will have the opportunity to get together for a fun night that facilitates the development of new friendships. Leave the Dorm-Room Door Open During Daylight HoursWhen they feel comfortable doing so, students should leave their rooms' doors open. An open door is a symbol that a student is willing to talk with other students who want to stop by for a visit. With open doors, students can see other people passing by the halls and they can say "hello." Frequent chats with other students in the dorm and friendly greetings often lead to dorm friendships. Attend all Dorm Events and ActivitiesMost college dorms host events and activities for resident students. Events might include new-student socials and campus tours, and activities might include running groups and game nights. The primary objective of these events and activities is to help the students in the dorm meet each other. Participating in an event or activity is a great way for students to introduce themselves to other students in the dorm. Invite Other Students to Explore the College Buildings and CampusPrior to starting classes, all college students need to explore and walk around their college campuses. It’s important for students to know where their classes are located. Therefore, if a student wants to walk around the campus, he or she could invite other students from the dorm floor to join the walk. Together the students can explore the campus, while talking and getting to know one another. Organize a Dorm Study GroupOnce classes have started, students can organize study groups within their dorms. A student can limit the study group to his or her own dorm floor or they can invite anyone from the dorm who wishes to get involved. Study groups are great not only for finding homework help but also for meeting people who are studying similar subjects. While making new friends in college might seem like a difficult task, there are several ways students can meet people and make friends in their college dorms. Students can host game nights, invite other students to explore the campus, or organize study groups. And, students can simply leave their dorm-room doors open and attend dorm events and activities.
